How To Move WhatsApp Chats From iPhone To Android

Concerns about data loss are a thing of the past now. Here’s how users can move their WhatsApp chats from an iPhone to an Android smartphone easily.

Messenger WhatsApp has finally made it possible for iPhone users to transfer their chat history to an Android smartphone. For many years, users have been asking for a native cross-platform chat migration tool, but until recently, it remained merely the stuff of imagination. From a technical standpoint, end-to-end encryption was thought to be the hurdle when it comes to transferring chat data between an iPhone and Android phone and vice versa.

Even though a few workarounds have existed, they’ve been either too cumbersome or simply unreliable. One official method that has existed for a while involves exporting each WhatsApp chat individually via email and then restoring it on the other device. The second option is using third-party apps — a few of them coming at a premium — but even a small error or a bug often led to the loss of data. Needless to say, a native iOS-to-Android or Android-to-iOS data migration system was sorely missed by users.

Well, the wait is finally over. For folks waiting to move their WhatsApp chat history from Android to iOS, all it takes is a few taps, and they’re good to go. The ability to transfer data from an iPhone to an Android device has been rolled out via version 2.21.160.17 of the iOS app, which is a test build at the time of this writing. But the arrival on the public beta channel means a wider release through the stable channel for all users is not too far off.

WhatsApp Move Chat From iPhone to Android

In order to move WhatsApp chat history from an iPhone to an Android phone, users must ensure that they’re running the latest build of WhatsApp on both their devices. Now, in the WhatsApp app running on an iPhone, head over to the Settings section and scroll down to find the ‘Move to Android’ option. Tap on it, and hit the start button on the next page. However, do keep in mind that pressing the ‘Start’ button will initiate the chat migration process for an account with the same linked number that will be running on the Android device. In case users want to transfer their chat to a WhatsApp account linked to a different number, they will have to tap on the ‘Transfer to a different phone number?’ option below the ‘Start’ button.

Once the desired chat transfer option has been selected, WhatsApp will create a backup data packet ready for transfer and restoration. This process can take anywhere between 10 seconds to a few minutes, depending on the amount of data that needs to be backed up. Once the process is over, users can set up WhatsApp on their Android phone after verifying their phone number and then restore the chat history by opting in to the data recovery process. At the time of this writing, a parallel Android-to-iOS data transfer system on WhatsApp has not appeared yet, but the company has been testing it for a while, meaning it will be rolled out sooner than later.
